ArcTanGent Festival 2014 Clash Guide Pt. 2

Welcome back to the ArcTanGent clash guide. Today we are looking at the ARC and PX3 stages on Friday 29th August. You can safely start the day at ARC with ALPHA MALE TEA PARTY and also catch MONSTERS BUILD MEAN ROBOTS and RUMOUR CUBES without too much issue as PX3 does not kick off until later. Those bands do have slight overlaps with the YOHKAI and BIXLER bands though so you may find yourself running around a bit to catch little bits of sets. After this the stage times spread a little so that you can get from one stage to another quite easily. Here is the clashfinder.

Clash 1

ARC STAGE

DIAGONAL – jazz | metal | progressive | progressive rock | psych rock | psychedelic rock

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=2169058943 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

PX3 STAGE

HOWARD JAMES KENNY – acoustic | loops | experimental | pop | progressive

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=2237628009 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

As ARC is the main stage we are going to find more people camping out at there for some of the more popular bands. HOWARD JAMES KENNY (who also plays in THE BROKEN OAK DUET on PX3 on Saturday) will be great for late risers who want some chilled acoustic vibes along with their morning coffee. If LOST IN THE RIOTS finish me off I may wander over there, but at the moment DIAGONAL are a must. Progressive. Psychedelic. Jazz. Metal…sold!

Clash 2

ARC STAGE

HUMAN PYRAMIDS – soundtrack

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1629611904 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

VS

PX3 STAGE

SUPER SQUARECLOUD – alternative | math | noise | pop | experimental

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3015392795 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

HUMAN PYRAMIDS are simply tagged as “soundtrack” in their Bandcamp. (Mostly) instrumental indie math-rock with lots of cool instruments sort of describes them, in my mind. I do feel that SUPER SQUARECLOUD may come across slightly better in a live situation, but I am going to have to take a chance on HUMAN PYRAMIDS. Either band is a nice change of context between the bands before and after them on the YOHKAI and BIXLER stages.

Clash 3

ARC STAGE

EF – alternative | experimental | indie | rock | instrumental | post-rock | progressive

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=3389796011 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

VS

PX3 STAGE

SLEEP BEGGAR – alternative | bass | beats | drums | feedback

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=2990580604 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

A choice between beautiful post-rock and shouty electro. I think the EF tent will be rammed, and that is where I’ll be. SLEEP BEGGAR have a tough clash here, I think. I would really like to see them in a small intimate space as the night draws to a relunctant close and the clubfestival casualties try to hold onto the last moments before crashing.

Clash 4

ARC STAGE

CRIPPLED BLACK PHEONIX – alternative rock

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=19096335 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

VS

PX3 STAGE

IRAN IRAN – experimental | math-rock | avant-garde | experimental | noise-rock

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1844305445 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

Absolutely love IRAN IRAN, I’ve seen them before and they make a great noise. So you should go and see them if you like your math noisy and manic. I am thinking about heading over to ARC to give CRIPPLED BLACK PHEONIX a try. I like what I’ve heard and as I have not heard them live it is the obvious choice (but you should go to IRAN IRAN, just sayin’.)

Clash 5

ARC STAGE

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU – experimental | instrumental | post-rock | progressive

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 album=1853169362 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

VS

PX3 STAGE

CHARLIE BARNES – alternative pop progressive

[bandcamp width=100% height=42 track=1328789986 size=small bgcol=ffffff linkcol=0687f5]

I am guessing that this CHARLIE BARNES performance will be a solo outing and that his full band will be playing the YOHKAI stage on Saturday. He is definitely worth checking out if you can; his voice is incredible. I can’t miss THIS WILL DESTROY YOU  though so I’ll probably catch Mr Barnes on the Saturday instead. Easy enough decision, see you at the ARC stage!

Next Wednesday: Part 3 looks at the clashes on the YOHKAI and BIXLER stage on Saturday 30th.
